Brian Simmonite award for innovation in traffic signal design

Brian Simmonite was the founder of JCT Consultancy and the creator of the well respected junction design and modelling software, LinSig. In 2009, after a distinguished career spanning 35 years Brian lost his long running battle with cancer and died at the age 55. Throughout his professional career Brian trained and mentored thousands of engineers. He was generous, well respected and loved by all who met him. As an engineer, Brian had a reputation for innovative thinking and he leaves behind countless examples of his work both large and small. In celebration of Brian’s professional life and in recognition of his unsurpassed contribution to the world of traffic signals, JCT are proud to announce the launch of a new annual award for innovation in traffic signal design.

The Brian Simmonite award for innovation in traffic signal design will be conferred to the winner of this annual competition. The winner will receive a cash prize (or equivalent) of £1000.

Entries must focus specifically on the design and implementation of traffic signal junctions but may include innovation in control techniques if they are rooted in junction design. Entries based solely on new equipment will not be eligible. The award will be granted to the entry which in the opinion of the judging panel represents the most innovative solution to a particular problem, sets an example of practice worthy of imitation and is one capable of advancing the field of traffic signal engineering.

A judging panel consisting of representatives from JCT along with Carol Debell (Editor tec) and Steve Spender (Vice President IHE) will consider entries for 2010.

The winning submission will be selected from a short list of commendable entries and all short listed authors will be invited to present a paper describing the work at the JCT Traffic Signal Symposium 15th – 16th September 2010. All shortlisted entries will also qualify for one free symposium place along with complementary overnight accommodation and meals for the principal speaker. The winner will be announced at the symposium and a presentation made.
